Building a new bag

  1. I started golfing a couple years ago with a set of clubs my father-in-law gave me, to get me into golfing. This year I'm planning on building a whole new bag (graduation present for myself). My question is do I build a bag of clubs based on my current handicap (mid-to-high) or do I build a bag based on where I want to be in the next couple of years. I've bought a golf mat and net and been practicing everyday, and my goal (like everyone else) is to drastically improve my game. That being said, the bag I build is going to have to help me now as well as work for me once I'm a better golfer, because I'm going to have to keep these clubs for several years. And before everyone says that I should be spending money on lessons instead, just know that I'm already pouring a ton of money into lessons for my 11 year old and have a 2 year old that more obsessed with swinging clubs and hitting balls into the net, than most of my adult friends that golf. I'm open to all the knowledge and advice I can get.

    Get fit....
  3. I’d definitely recommend getting fitted, it’s worth it. I originally planned to build my bag based on my own research, and I felt pretty confident in the setup I had in mind. But a friend convinced me to go through a fitting, especially considering the investment.

I just went this week, and I can tell you firsthand what I researched versus what actually worked when hitting balls was completely different. I tested the shafts I thought I wanted and only got one of them right. The fitters at most places are very knowledgeable and can make a big difference.

For where your game is now versus where it’s going, I’d build your bag for your current swing. Getting into the right clubs for your game today is the most important thing. It’ll help you practice and improve more effectively, rather than trying to force a less forgiving setup.
